Large Burnished Clay Dancing Skeleton Vase, handcrafted in Michoacán, Mexico by an award-winning artisan whose family workshop has preserved this extraordinary ceramic tradition since 1915.
This museum-quality vase features the iconic Dancing Skeletons (Calacas) motif, inspired by Mexico’s vibrant celebration of life and the Day of the Dead. The elegant burnished finish is achieved through an intensive, generations-old firing process that creates a naturally polished surface without commercial glazes, giving the vase its rich luster and timeless beauty.
Each piece begins as locally sourced clay, carefully shaped by hand and fired in traditional wood-burning kilns. After the first firing, the artisan meticulously engraves and applies intricate designs using natural red, blue, and black mineral pigments inspired by prehistoric cave paintings. The vase is then returned to the kiln, permanently fusing the artwork into the clay while producing its signature polished finish.
Our collaboration with this master artisan brings only a limited number of these remarkable works to Casa Gardenia. Many of these pieces have been showcased at prestigious Mexican folk art festivals and have received multiple awards for their exceptional craftsmanship.
Most vases are personally signed by the artisan, making each one a collectible work of authentic Mexican folk art.
